Writing for newsletters and other news periodicals should be brief and to the point. Writing concise, interesting articles can be more challenging than writing longer stories. Why? It's hard to "write short" without being superficial or even misleading. Recent research shows that the traditional "pyramid" style of news writing is not necessarily the most effective. Topics include:

- Strong leads and conclusions

- Ways to bring news to life and avoid tired formulas
- Dos and don'ts of using spoken and printed quotations

- Participants receive The Associated Press Guide to News Writing or equivalent.
