New EEI Press Title Promises To Improve Your Grammar Skills
The editors, writers, and designers at EEI Press are pleased
to announce the publication of The Great Grammar Challenge:
Test Yourself on Punctuation, Usage, Grammar — and More.
According to Claire Kincaid, president of EEI
Communications, the concept behind this new book is
simple — and crucial for communicating well in the business
world. "We're word people here, and each day we become more
convinced that practice makes perfect when it comes to mastering
the English language," she says. A sequence of self-tests
drawn from real-life publications scenarios, the Challenge
is a fun resource for readers to sharpen skills at their
own pace, in a practical business context.
Editors Priscilla S. Taylor and Mary
Stoughton are Washington-area publications professionals
with over a quarter-century of publications experience.
Stoughton is a senior editor at EEI Communications and has
taught copyediting
workshops for over a decade. She is the author of Substance
& Style: Instruction & Practice in Copyediting
and an associate editor of The
New York Public Library Writer's Guide to Style and Usage.
Taylor, also an associate editor of the Guide, is
the former editor of The Editorial Eye,
EEI's trusted newsletter of publications standards, practices,
and trends. She is currently the editor of The Key Reporter,
Phi Beta Kappa's widely circulated quarterly newsletter.
"We're really excited about this book," says Linda Jorgensen,
manager of EEI Press and current editor of The Editorial
Eye. "Eye readers are the force behind the Challenge.
They've been asking for a book like this for years. Publications
professionals at all levels of experience can benefit from
an occasional grammar refresher."
Taylor and Stoughton have compiled excerpts from the Eye's
beloved "Test Yourself" column and organized the quizzes
and accompanying explanations by topic and level of difficulty.
The index helps readers zero in on problem areas. "We chose
examples in which the intricacies of language and usage
challenge even seasoned wordsmiths," says Taylor.
EEI Press offers discounts on specially
selected title groups. Each title group includes three complementary
books that focus on publications-related skills and interests
in a specific area: editing and proofreading, publishing,
or business and marketing. Ideal for professional editors
and proofreaders, The Great Grammar Challenge is
available in a set with
Mark My Words
and Substance & Style
for $80. Call 1-800-683-8380 for ordering information, or
