EXTERNAL RELATIONS MANAGER
EEI Communications, the Publishing Think Tank, is looking for an External Relations Manager, for one of their clients in Silver Spring, MD. This is a direct hire opportunity and offers a very competitive salary.
Job Summary: The External Relations Manager (ERM) works under the direction of the Chief of External Relations (CER) and communicates and interacts with the company’s highest stakeholders. The External Relations Department currently consists of: Communications, Public Policy, Resource Development and Clinical Trial Support. The ERM should be poised, diplomatic and have the ability to understand nuanced and complex internal and external issues. Thorough knowledge of company’s operations, philosophy, international relations, policies and procedures is essential.
RESPONSIBILITIES: • Manage special projects from inception to completion. Create and maintain project documentation including status reports and schedules. • Collaborate with ER directors and managers to ensure integration and adoption of project outcomes. • Act as the CER’s representative in internal and external meetings as appropriate. Prepare executive level summaries and disseminate to appropriate staff, consultants and partners. • Provide additional support to External Relations functional units to help fill gaps and capacity needs as necessary. • Provide overall operations management to the CER and External Relations department to ensure prioritization and completion of activities. • Monitor and make recommendations to the CER, as needed, regarding the department’s operational/administrative capacity and the development and maintenance of systems to track information and timelines on cross-departmental projects. • Liaise with department heads on personnel issues including but not limited to: analysis of workloads, capacity and skill sets; guidance on staff development and annual performance review assessment. • Maintain close communication with External Relations department heads on operational issues. Understand organizational policies and procedures. Recommend and implement operational improvements within the department, as appropriate. • Develop and monitor the External Relations annual budget and handle internal finance items for CER sign off. • Write, review, proof read and copy edit a range of written materials, including correspondence, e-mail, talking points, presentations, progress reports, and other related documents for final clearance of CER.
REQUIREMENTS: • Bachelor’s Degree in international relations, political science, public relations, or other related field. Graduate degree a plus. • Minimum 5 years related management experience working in communications, advocacy, public policy, health, or related field. Eight or more years preferred. • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, especially Outlook, Word and PowerPoint. • Excellent organizational, project management and implementation skills; proven ability to prioritize projects and initiate follow through with meticulous attention to detail and high-level accuracy. High level of initiative and resourcefulness. • Experience in managing projects including analysis, inception, launch, monitoring, preparing progress reports and finalizing. • Well-organized with proven ability to work effectively under pressure and handle multiple simultaneous tasks and demands; demonstrated ability to prioritize projects and initiate follow through with meticulous attention to detail and high-level accuracy. • Exceptional interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, including tact, patience, diplomacy, appropriate assertiveness, and excellent listening skills; culturally sensitive and able to deal with conflict productively. • Ability to interact and influence at the most senior levels of an organization and to work collaboratively across functions, levels and departments. Mentor/coach staff as appropriate. • Tolerant of ambiguity, and rapid organizational growth; works well under pressure; flexible, resourceful and unflappable. • Willing to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
